Bendigo gambling records record losses

February 4, 2020 by Admin

Luck seems to be consistently evading the punters of Bendigo, Victoria. The latest data reveals that players from the region are losing more at pokies than a year prior.  The period from 2018 to 2019 saw pokies losses increase by 2.5% from $50,005,104 to $51,218,482. This brings the loss to $1 million, the biggest upsurge in a decade.

Officials were blindsided by this news as efforts to combat problem gambling have been recently intensified by local authorities. Recent years have seen a number of pokies being frozen across the state. In addition, pokies have been limited in areas with higher levels of identified vulnerable players have seen their pokies limited, and restrictions being placed on cash withdrawals.

Bendigo’s 2019 gambling losses

The section below examines 11 gambling venues in the Greater Bendigo area and their losses recorded from July to December 2019.

  • Bendigo District DSL – $4,497,386.03. The winning average, per-machine came to $48,359 on 93 pokies.
  • Kangaroo Flat Sports Club – $1,150,982.95. The club’s pokies averaged $19,183
  • Windemere Hotel – $3,443,838.94. 40 poker machines made an average of $86,096 apiece.
  • Bendigo Stadium – $3,171,202.11. This sporting arena scored an average of $30,202 per machine.
  • The All Seasons Hotel – $5,953,660.52. The venue’s 99 machines took an average of $60,138.
  • The Bendigo Club – $1,452,749.29. The club’s machines earned an average of $24,212.
  • The Foundry Hotel Complex – $1,011,013.19. Each poker machine earned an average of $40,441.
  • Shamrock Hotel – $1,950,726.21. The pokies’ average earnings came in at $30,011.
  • The Rising Sun Hotel – $1,865,571.57. The per-machine average was $53,302.
  • The Borough Club – $1,497,975.14. The machines averaged $37,449.
  • City Family Hotel – $823,027.32. The per-machine winning average was $21,103.

Greater Bendigo has a population of over 111,000 people. Bearing this in mind, the losses average out to $441 per resident. Most Bendigonians, however, don’t play pokies, so these losses are being absorbed by an unlucky few.

The challenging peculiarities of Online Gambling

Victoria’s push to address against problem gambling still has many hurdles to clear. The state has endorsed several restrictions against online gaming operators in 2019. Among the most notable are:

  • Sports-betting providers are barred from marketing online services to customers. The sole exception applies where punters who want to play real money online pokies decide to opt-in to marketing of this type.
  • Operators must streamline the processes punters have to follow to set limits or close their accounts.
  • Websites are prohibited from offering vouchers, credit or other rewards to tempt punters into opening an account.
  • Free money can only be awarded, under the condition that it’s can only be used to make wagers.

The above rules listed above form part of the National Consumer Protection Framework. Several years’ worth of effort and dedication went into this initiative which is squarely focused on reducing gambling harm within Victoria.

Costello chimes in

Tim Costello, chief advocate for the Alliance for Gambling Reform understandably had strong feelings regarding the gambling losses and wasted no time in making them known.

He characterized pokies as a “blight” on Bendigo, adding, “Poker machines are designed to be deliberately addictive.”

“Poker machines are an effective drain on local economies. We know that a substantial percentage of those losses come from people experiencing gambling harm and that gambling harm is often at its worst in areas that can least afford the losses.”

Costello laid out his suggested solutions to remedy the problem:

  • Do away with losses masquerading as wins.
  • Introduce regulations to limit the spin rate of pokies.
  • Reduce the maximum per-spin wager limit from $5 to $1.
  • Cut business hours for places offering pokies.

Casino Mogul Donates to Aussie Wildfire Relief

January 14, 2020 by Admin

The world has watched in combined shock as wildfires have torn across Australia, taking lives and causing untold damage. The average person can do little other than to hope for the best, but those who are able to assist, such as local casino mogul James Packer, have done their part in the way that most makes sense, by donating.

Packer is most known for owning multiple casinos across Australia and the United Kingdom, as well as being a key name in the various luxurious Crown Resorts. He initially donated AU$1 million back in November, when the fires first erupted. But as the fires spread, intensified, and show no signs of abating, the billionaire businessman made an additional donation of AU$4 million.

The amount will be split between the Crown Resorts Foundation and Packer Family Foundation, which will, in turn, provide funding to the various fire-fighting services and relief efforts across the country.

Doing His Bit for The Country

The 52-year-old businessman explains that he was utterly horrified by the images he saw of the local devastation. This involves the latest reports on the fires, which have now claimed 2 lives, as well as destroying 43 homes in East Gippsland.

The sight motivated Packer to do his bit, he elaborated, in the only way he could, by making another donation. Though it was noted that the funds are limited to Western Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales, all of which are also home to Crown Resorts. So, some criticism has been heard accusing the mogul of favouring only areas where his personal casino investments are located. Either way, the donation is still certainly a generous one.

Crown Resorts Face Their Own Fire

But these accusations are the least of Packer’s worries at this point. His donations come at a time when he is having his own feet put to the fire, with local anti-money laundering regulator, AUSTRAC, homing in on his resorts.

Mutterings of serious misconduct in connection with Crown Resorts have long been rumoured, and may soon come to light as AUSTRAC engage in their investigations. It has been suggested that Crown Resort casinos, and by extension Packer himself, have indirectly been involved with organised crime syndicates, including those that have links to human trafficking and illegal drug trade.

It remains to be seen if the accusations turn out to be true, but the investigation itself is certainly not good publicity for the billionaire, despite his generous donations.

A Recap of Australia Gambling News in 2019

January 7, 2020 by Admin

2019 is over, but many of the events from the previous year remain. This is especially true of Aussie gambling news, as many items will continue to have an impact during this year and beyond.

This article serves as a recap of the most important stories of the year. Be sure to check back with us throughout 2020, as many of these are bound to crop up once again.

Revised Advertising Codes for New Zealand

Gambling ads in New Zealand are now facing greater scrutiny. This is due to a new code enacted by the Advertising Standards Authority. The main points include:

  • Gambling ads cannot target children or young people.
  • Gambling ads must be truthful. Chances of winning must be verified, and terms and conditions should be readily available.
  • Under the new guidelines, ads cannot condone or encourage harm from gambling.

Woolworths Abandons Gambling

Supermarket giant Woolworths has been offering poker machines to its customers since 2004. However, that all changed thanks to a July announcement that the retailer was getting out of the gambling business. Their 12,000 pokies will be spun off into another company, so expect another major player to appear on the gaming scene in 2020.

Trouble for Crown Resorts

Crown Resorts came under fire after a series of damaging media reports. While Crown has denied the various accusations, the Aussie government is making inquiries.

According to various reports, Crown may be guilty of the following sins:

  • Got politicians to bend the rules to make it easier for Chinese high rollers to enter the country.
  • Violating various gambling laws in China.
  • Arranged for prostitutes to accompany high rollers on their flights to Australia.
  • Dealt with crime syndicates who controlled junkets, including those involved in drug trafficking and money laundering.

Casino Canberra Suffers Losses

Since its debut in 1992, Casino Canberra has been a gambling mainstay in the Australian Capital Territory. Unfortunately, that’s starting to change.

Despite multiple efforts, the casino has failed to secure permission to offer poker machines. There was talk of expansion after being purchased by the Aquis Group in 2014, but the proposals were shot down by the ACT government.

For the first six months of 2019, the casino reported a loss of over $2 million. Losses were up 18.4% from the previous year, which is never a good sign.

WPT Debuts in Australia

The World Poker Tour made its debut in Australia in 2019. The event took place at The Star Gold Coast in Queensland, with Hari Varma picking up the win and $274,247 in prize money.

Credit Card Giant Bans Gambling Transactions

Back in July, the Macquarie Group announced that their credit cards could no longer be used for real money gambling transactions. This ban applies to poker, bingo, and even lottery draws. This move drew praise from the Alliance for Gambling Reform, although seasoned punters were no doubt upset.

Self-Exclusion for Online Gamblers

In the near future, Aussie gamblers will be able to exclude themselves from online casinos and sportsbooks. It’s known as the National Self-Exclusion Register, and it’ll be overseen by the Australian Communication and Media Authority. Since the number of problem gamblers across the nation grows each year, this seems like a reasonable step.

Credit Card Ban on Sports Betting

There’s already a ban in place on using credit cards at Australian casinos. However, the same may soon apply to sports betting. The Australian Banking Association is asking members of the community for their input, and this will continue until March 4th. Afterward, the organization will decide whether or not a ban is justified.

Facial Recognition in Australia

Facial recognition technology is already being used in some Aussie casinos and cities. Now, Tabcorp Holdings is about to be added to the list. Beginning in the middle of 2020, more than 400 TAB agencies will be adding the technology to combat underage gambling.

There’s also talk of starting a nationwide database to combat everything from terrorism to identity theft. A bill has been introduced into the House of Representatives, but there’s yet to be a definite decision. Still, it seems like only a matter of time before you’ll have to use such technology to sign up for online casinos and porn sites.

Happy 2020

The year 2020 promises to be filled with exciting news from across the nation. In order to keep up, be sure to check in here on a regular basis. Until next time, here’s hoping you have a happy and prosperous new year!

South Australia Mulls Gambling Reforms

October 15, 2019 by Admin

The South Australian State Parliament will be considering a proposed package of gambling reforms this week. The proposals, if approved, would have widespread effects on the state’s punters. The reforms remain a contentious issue, with vocal opponents vowing to halt them in their tracks.

The Proposals

The following proposals have been presented to the state for consideration:

  • Pokies would be able to accept banknotes instead of coins.
  • Rather than reducing the number of poker machines in the state, a maximum limit would be put in place.
  • Restrictions would be lifted, allowing access to gaming machines on Good Friday and Christmas Day.
  • Clubs would have fewer restrictions when performing certain functions including, club mergers and the transfer of gambling machines (such as video poker) between locations.
  • Venues would be able to indefinitely ban “problem gamblers”. Banned players would face having their winnings seized and donated to the Gamblers Rehabilitation Fund which would also absorb any unclaimed winnings.

Proponents and opponents

The reforms have found their biggest supporter in Attorney-General Vickie Chapman.

Chapman believes that the proposals will greatly assist in curtailing problem gambling in the state. “Through these changes, we’re looking to maintain support for our vibrant hospitality sector while ensuring there’s help available to those who are at risk,” said Chapman.

Chapman pointed out that allowing banknote-accepting machines would align South Australia with similar policies, adopted by other Aussie states as well as New Zealand.

Lawmakers have added their support, favouring the prospect of a reduction in the bureaucracy that clubs have to deal with. Paving an easier way for club mergers would also eventually reduce their total number.

It remains to be seen whether the proposals will survive the wrath of their fiercest detractors. Tim Costello of the Alliance for Gambling Reform called the banknote proposal “appalling.”

He drew comparisons between American gun laws and Aussie gambling laws. “It’s why going from coin-operated to cash is really like going from the ball-and-musket rifle in America – the Second Amendment right to carry a gun – to the semiautomatic and claiming the same right to carry a gun. That technology change makes no sense for liberty in America; here what South Australia is doing is just going backwards.”

Best MLC Frank Pangallo is standing in defiance, alongside Costello. In his opinion, the banknote reform is nothing less than “thoughtless, callous and heartless.”

Pangallo fears that the measure would “absolutely accelerate problem gambling.”

Another SA Best MLC Connie Bonaros has also joined the ranks of those opposed, pointing out that the coin-only policy has been the “single most effective harm minimization measure” currently in place. She accused members of the government of turning a deaf ear to gambling advocates and experts.

More than meets the eye?

Several journalists have speculated that ulterior motives may be at play. The working theory is that some parties may stand to gain from the reforms.

Records from the SA Electoral Commission clearly show that the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) has made a number of political donations.  2019 has seen the group donate more than $6,000 to the Labor Party and over $42,000 to the Liberal Party.

The AHA has lauded the proposals, eagerly pointing out the benefits to hotels, clubs, and legal casinos. The political donations have, however, left a cloud of suspicion hanging over the organization, as increased profits in the industry would offer a direct and immediate financial benefit to them.

Tabcorp scores new multi-year agreement with NFL; named Official Wagering Partner in Australia

September 29, 2019 by Admin

Australia’s leading diversified gambling entertainment group, Tabcorp Holdings Limited (ASX: TAH), has entered into a new wagering partnership with the National Football League (NFL).

The Melbourne-headquartered gambling company announced the multi-year agreement that will see it become the NFL’s Official Wagering Partner in what is the largest country in Oceania.

“Our goal is to support the growing appetite for the NFL in Australia.“

According to the company’s official news release…

…the ground-breaking partnership will enable Tabcorp (TAB) to “create unique NFL content and experiences for Australian fans across its digital platforms and venues” and  combines its status as the country’s biggest multi-channel wagering brand with the professional American football league’s position as the “premier global sporting brand.”

Partnership details:

TAB and the NFL will additionally meld to promote the league’s official Pick’em free-to-play football game, via the Nflpickem.com.au domain, which will give fans in Australia the opportunity to win weekly prizes.

A grand prize trip to the Pro Bowl, which for the fourth consecutive year will see the AFC battle the NFC at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida on Jan. 26, 2020, will also be up for grabs.

Additional terms of the partnership deal include Tabcorp and satellite television channel, Sky Channel, streaming NFL Network and (six hours) NFL RedZone programming along with one NFL game per week to its commercial network of over 4,400 clubs, pubs and TAB agencies.

Support NFL popularity:

Commenting on the recent tie-up, Managing Director Wagering & Media for Tabcorp, Adam Rytenskild, said…

“We are proud to bring Australians NFL action to enhance our existing sports offering to customers and venues and complement Sky’s unrivalled coverage of Australian and international racing. Our goal is to support the growing appetite for the NFL in Australia. This gives fans more value in line with our strategy of using our assets to create unique experiences for customers.”

For its part, NFL Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy & Growth Officer, Christopher Halpin, said that they [NFL] look forward to working with Australia’s leading operator.

“We are excited about our growing popularity in Australia and this partnership will help further serve our fans there,” said Halpin.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed in the Wednesday news release.

AGA sports betting survey:

According to a new survey recently released by the American Gaming Association(AGA), 38,000,000 American adults, 15% of the adult population in the U.S., plan to wager on NFL games this season. And that American sports bettors have legally wagered more than $10 billion since last year’s invalidation of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which had largely limited sports wagering to land-based casinos in Nevada.

Legal sports betting has grown exponentially since PASPA and after decades of the NFL’s longstanding antiquated public stance on sports betting and that legalization would compromise the integrity of the game, the league has embraced gambling.

Marketing spend:

Just days before the NFL concluded its 99th season, American sponsorship consulting and valuation firm, IEG,  announced that marketing spend on last season’s edition of the NFL increased by some 5.1 percent year-on-year to reach $1.39 billion thanks in part to an increase in the value of deals the sport inked with firms involved in real money casinos and sportsbetting.

NFL sponsorship deals:

In January, the NFL inked a historic agreement with Caesars Entertainment, naming it its first ‘official casino sponsor.’ The gaming and hospitality corporation founded in 1937 has relationships with seven NFL Clubs, including the Oakland Raiders (soon to be the Las Vegas Raiders), Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles,  New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Ravens. How’s that for embracing?

Meanwhile, last month, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd. announced a new multi-year sponsorship agreement making it the Official Casino Partner of the NFL in Canada. The Burnaby-headquartered gaming and entertainment company operates 27 gaming properties in British Columbia, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta.

Impairment charges pummel Donaco International Limited amidst annual losses

Impairment charges pummel Donaco International Limited amidst annual losses

Asian casino operator Donaco International Limited have found themselves in troubled waters.

Their recently released financial results for the twelve months to the end of June show an annual loss that widened by 55.8% year-on-year to hit nearly $130.88 million. The cause was $134.99 million in non-cash impairment charges.

A report obtained from GGRAsia, reveals that the Sydney-listed firm used an official filing to detail the impairment charges. These included a $125.86 million setback linked to the value of the casino license for its Star Vegas Resort and Club property. This followed an attempt by the owner of the Cambodian venue to terminate its 50-year lease. The matter currently remains the subject of litigation.

Profits through the floor

Despite the impairment penalties, Donaco’s underlying net profit after tax, for the twelve-month period had reached approximately $6.19 million. However, this represented a year-on-year decline of 49.7%.

Overall annual revenues had plummeted by 6.8% to hit approximately $58.21 million, while its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization were 30.2% lower at around $19.96 million.

Donaco cited rising competition in the Cambodian casino market as the cause of an overall annual reduction in revenues for its Star Vegas Resort and Club. The revenues fell by a little over 2.8% year-on-year to slightly above $43.64 million.  The venue’s net gaming revenues also shrank by 9.9%.

To add to the firm’s woes, unfavourable junket deals, linked to previous management team members, had negatively impacted their facility located in the border town of Poipet. Donaco hopes that a process of renegotiating some of these arrangements will yield favourable results.

Seemingly defiant of the growing adversity at its doorstep, Donaco’s Star Vegas Resort and Club improved on the previous year’s visitor numbers.  The venue recorded an impressive VIP turnover swell of 76% ‘due to the full-year impact of junkets brought in to replace those poached by the Thai vendor in the fiscal year 2018’ according to the report.

Bouncing back in Vietnam:

According to Donaco, “a weak start to the year’ at their gaming operation inside northern Vietnam’s Aristo International Hotel set their VIP business back 54%.  This, in turn, led to an annual drop in 0/revenues by 16.6% year-on-year to around $14.57 million

Fortune shifted in the firm’s favour, with the enterprise recovering in the second half of the year as they posted a full-year win rate that was 0.18 percentage points higher than the previous twelve-month period at 2.09%.

Changing faces as heads roll:

GGRAsia further reported that Donaco subsequently used a second filing to report significant operational and management changes.  The recent appointment of Paul Arbuckle as its new Chief Executive Office stands out as the most prominent.  A desire for a ‘fresh start’ inspired the removal from its board in July of two founding members.  Joey Lim Keong Yew and Ben Lim Keong Hoe, the grandsons of Genting Malaysia Berhad and founder Lim Goh Tong were obliged to vacate their posts for the sake of the organization’s future.

A humbling renewal:

In poignant fashion, Donaco International Limited used this presentation as a means to lay them bare. Reflecting on their most recent full-year results, they admitted that a ‘lack of effective management and leadership under [the] former executive team’ had lead to this catastrophic freefall in the company’s fortunes.

The firm was happy to share that the newly appointed senior leadership had made ‘an immediate positive impact’, with their July results from both operations showing significant improvement.

Spin Sorceress Slot

Spin Sorceress is a medieval-themed slot game, where the main character, the sorceress herself, plays a crucial role in the gameplay. She can transform all symbols into wild symbols, giving the player an enhanced shot at winning big.  The game is bright and visually exciting.  A free game feature adds to the appeal of this title as a player can get up to 20 free spins and 3 sorceress wild reels on each free spin.  The mystical, snowy theme is a delight for fans of classic fantasy.

Believe in magic

Fantasy endures because of its universal appeal, and the child in all of us will always be excited at the prospect of a magical adventure. Combined with the thrill of potentially winning a fortune, each experience really does feel like an epic quest for treasure.

This enthralling genre of slots continues to entice real-money casino buffs and may just end up being your favourite too.
